A warm, sunny strip along the eastern flank of the Haardt hills — the northern continuation of France's Vosges — the Pfalz is Germany's second- largest wine region and, increasingly, one of its most exciting. Almonds and figs ripen along its wine route, a sign of a climate mild enough to give Riesling real body and to ripen Pinot Noir and even Cabernet.

Its northern Mittelhaardt villages make some of Germany's grandest dry Rieslings, powerful and mineral; the broader region turns out everything from juicy Dornfelder to serious Pinot. Warmer and more generous than the Mosel, the Pfalz is where German wine looks most confidently southward.
