Famous for Egri Bikavér — "Bull's Blood" — Eger is northern Hungary's red- wine town, its volcanic hills riddled with a labyrinth of cellars cut into the soft tuff. The legendary blend, wrapped in a siege myth from the Turkish wars, is led today by Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) with a supporting cast of local and international grapes.

At its best it is medium-bodied, spicy and food-friendly, a world away from the thin bulk version that traded on the name for decades. Eger also makes fresh whites and elegant Pinot Noir, and its revival is one of the quieter good-news stories of central European wine.
