The hardest vineyard on earth to build: schist mountainsides terraced by hand over three centuries, wall upon wall — a landscape UNESCO listed in 2001. Pombal's demarcation of 1756 set stone markers around the port-wine country, among the first legal boundaries in wine, and rabelo boats ran the barrels down the rapids to the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia.

Dams tamed the wild river in the twentieth century, and the region has been quietly reinventing itself since: alongside port, the dry reds pioneered by Barca Velha in 1952 now lead Portugal. Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz — Tempranillo under its Douro name — head a field-blend heritage of dozens of old varieties.
