The historic heart of Armenian wine, in the high mountains of the south. Above the village of Areni, the Areni-1 cave holds the oldest known winery on Earth — a clay fermentation vat, a press and grape remains dated to around 4100 BC. Armenia, with neighbouring Georgia, sits at the very cradle of viticulture.

At some 1,400 metres the vineyards see fierce sun and cold nights on volcanic tuff, giving fresh, high-toned wines: the perfumed red Areni and the golden white Voskehat above all, worked both in modern cellars and in buried clay karasi. After the Soviet century of brandy, a craft revival has put Armenia back among the world's most distinctive wine countries.
