Facing the Médoc across the water, the citadel of Blaye and the little port of Bourg guard slopes that claim the oldest continuous vineyard of the Gironde — the Romans planted these estuary hillsides before the Médoc was anything but marsh. For centuries their wines loaded at Bourg fetched better prices than the left bank's.

History inverted the ranking, not the quality of the ground: warm clay-limestone slopes where Merlot fattens and old Malbec persists — the largest holdout of the pre-phylloxera grape in Bordeaux. Today the Côtes make the region's best-value structured reds, and the estuary view alone repays the detour.
