The cradle. Bordeaux's medieval vineyard began here, at the city's southern gates, and the claret fleets that sailed for England were loaded above these terraces. Haut-Brion — Pepys's "Ho Bryan" of 1663 — invented the château brand on this gravel, a century before the Médoc's ascent.

It is the one great region that is genuinely two-coloured: smoky, supple reds of Cabernet and Merlot, and dry whites of Sauvignon and Sémillon that count among the longest-lived in the world. The historic northern parishes became Pessac-Léognan in 1987, defending their vines row by row against the growing city.
