Pinot Gris is the grape that gives Alsace its golden, opulent wines; north-east Italy read it the other way — picked early, fermented cool in steel, light, dry and lemony — and turned that reading into one of the most exported white wines on earth. The delle Venezie DOC, created in 2017, gathered the broad production of Veneto, Friuli and Trentino under one name.
The grape's skin is not white but pink, and Friuli's older tradition remembers it: "ramato" versions, given brief skin contact, come out copper-tinged and gently tannic. The mainstream stays paler and simpler — citrus, green pear, a twist of almond — cool, blameless, and poured everywhere.
