The castelli are the fortified hill villages ringing the town of Jesi, a medieval defensive crown in the Marche hills that became, by quiet accumulation, the address of Italy's most decorated white wine — year after year no appellation collects more top awards from the national guides, and year after year it is priced like a secret.
The grape rewards the faith: green almond, lemon pith, anise and sea salt, with riservas that age twenty years into honey and flint. The amphora-shaped bottle of the 1950s boom — a marketing stroke that carried Verdicchio around the world and then cheapened its name — is gone; the wine, structural and saline and built on Adriatic hills, remains.
